Old abandoned houses near VSU

I was going through some of my old film scans and found quite a number of things I shot and never posted that were of interest. Almost always when I haven't posted here, I have actually been shooting, but just didn't get around to posting anything. I'm going to try to post some old stuff that I forgot about in the next few weeks.

Back in February I took a few documentary shots of some of the old houses across the street from the Fine Arts building. These houses - and more importantly, the land that they sit on - were purchased by a company to build a complex on with living and retail spaces. There was some outcry to save the old historic homes, so they were offered for only $10 - you just had to haul them away!

No one took them up on that offer, but even now, 7 months later, nothing has been done about them. I'm not sure what is going to happen to them.

Here are a few negatives from my Yashica 124G and Ektar film:

I also took some digital images inside one of the houses - here's three from my D800E, and either 17-35mm f/2.8 or 16mm f/3.5 AI:

  1. I've shot some Ektar with a Yashica Mat as well - the colours are very distinctive. Ektar has a thing for straw-colour, it goes very crisp in the highlights, and there's a bit of magenta in the shot of the window (at the bottom). I found that it always looked as if I had shot with a warming filter, not necessarily a bad thing.

The houses look as if they'd catch fire easily. House prices here in the UK average £230,000 or so and although I'm sure location has a part to play $10 is very good. NB I spotted your blog via the Mamiya medium format stuff, I was trying to find samples of the 45mm f/2.8. I'm torn whether to bother with 645 or not, it doesn't have the character of 6x6 and feels a bit anonymous - as if it was digital, before digital - but I have a 645 1000S body and it seems a shame not to use it now and again.

  2. Hi Ashley,

Personally I've gotten rid of the Mamiya. It was kind of a hefty camera with the auto winder / grip. I got along better with my Pentax 67, and I like the 6x7 aspect ratio. I also got rid of the Yashica too because I just didn't like the way it rendered the out of focus areas...I'd like to get a nice Rolleiflex sometime just because (with a Planar lens!) because I do like 6x6.

I think I need to try Ektar again. I didn't like it much after shooting a bunch of it in 35mm and 120, but my last roll I figured out how to scan it better. I should re-scan these actually because I did these scans with my old scanner and it didn't like Ektar at all.

Thanks for checking out my blog!
